Simpleware software used for dinosaur CSI

The Barcelona Supercomputer Center recently welcomed Dr Phil Manning and Dr Lee Margetts from Manchester Research Computing Services and a National Geographic film crew to produce a film showing how supercomputing is being used in Paleontology.

The footage shows how palaeontologists are using advanced supercomputing technology to understand the form and function of fossilized dinosaur bones.

Simpleware software was used for converting 3D images of fossil dinosaur bones into high quality finite element meshes. The meshes were exported into ParaFEM software (by Manchester Research Computing Services) for FE analyses. A Lego dinosaur was used to help dinosaur enthusiasts (from age 5 upwards) to understand the basic concept behind the finite element method.

The clip will be part of a 6 part documentary called "Dinosaur CSI" that will be screened in 2010 on the National Geographic Channel.

IMAGE-BASED MODELLING GROUP
The University of Manchester also recently created a User Group on Image-based Modelling to seed a community of people interested in this area. If you are interested in joining this group, please sign up at the Group's website.
