Simpleware joins the Eden Project in Public Awareness scheme
Exeter - 15/06/2005
Simpleware will contribute to Biomimicry display
Simpleware is assisting in the process of providing the Eden Project with some exhibits for its new
Education Centre, which is due to open in the Summer of 2005. Rapid prototyped models and computer
simulations on the theme of Biomimicry, will be developed from CT scan images of plant and insect
specimens. The resultant models will form elements to hands-on, interactive displays from which
children and adults of all ages can learn about how scientists and engineers use nature as an
invaluable source of inspiration.
As a joint venture between the University of Exeter and Exeter Advanced Technologies (x-at),
Simpleware has been asked to contribute to a set of displays on Biomimicry: the imitation of nature
to develop scientific and engineering processes. Classic examples of Biomimicry include Velcro,
inspired by burdock seeds; helicopter blades, inspired by sycamore seeds and in particular relation
to the Eden Project, the structure of a dragonfly?s eye as the inspiration behind the design of the
Biomes.
The new centre will house a range of hands-on exhibits which will convey key messages that are at the
forefront of global debate and will include, climate change, biodiversity and the life cycles. The
emphasis on the displays will not only be to convey these messages, but also to highlight some of the
innovative tools available in the more non-traditional aspects of science and engineering today. The
displays aim to inform the debate for the topical issues of today and show how engineering tools can
"help the research base evolve in tune with the changing needs of a more informed society". It is also
hoped that the exhibits will inspire young future generations of researchers.
The project is carried out as a result of a Partnerships for Public Awareness (PPA) grant, awarded to
Exeter University by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
